Xin took me to the front desk, where he spoke with the Myan behind the desk in a completely different language. I was almost certain it wasnât the same language he used with his injured friend before or the drivers. There was a little face touching but not much. A Myan down the counter, who wasnât a part of the conversation at all, seemed to be trying to get Xinâs attention, but Xin was having none of it.
He asked me to stay by the desk and then disappeared into a room behind it with a frosted door. He was gone several minutes before he walked out and smiled at me. He took my hand in his and kissed the back of it.
I couldnât tell if he was happy, or if he were trying to break bad news gently.
âWell?â I asked.
âWeâre going to meet my Upper,â he said. âWe need to take a shuttle there. One is on the way.â
Surprised, I stared at him for several seconds as he smiled again. I had honestly thought we wouldnât have made it further than the visit to the front desk.
Xin led me to the front of the lobby, to the landing pad. Once there, we waited in silence. I couldnât come up with anything to say, and I think Xin sensed my anxiety and turmoil. He would turn at a motion, sometimes waving as a human walked by, but otherwise appeared patient, as if he hadnât a care in the world.
Several minutes passed before a shuttle set down. The door slid open, and the pilot walked out. I thought she was the one who brought me from the jumper to the resort, but I couldnât be certain, so I didnât bring it up.
We climbed on board and, just like before, were flying off before the pilot announced we were even in the air. The windows were clear for the trip out of the dome. I craned my neck, looking for one of those fuel animals again, but saw nothing at all.
I supposed even they needed to be harvested at some point. Couldnât have too many or too few of them.
As the shuttle approached the equator, the windows clouded over, but not entirely. Lights flashed by. I could see them because of a change in the illumination out the window. The lights sat at regular intervals but seemed really far apart.
When the ship touched down, it made a little bump like it had the day of my arrival.
I almost breathed a sigh of relief.
A clawing fear in my belly stopped the sigh, catching it at the back of my throat as I looked across the seating to Xin. Instead, I almost felt sick. A little dizzy even.
Xin helped me to my feet and led me out of the shuttle.
We were in some sort of shuttle bay, I assumed. I could see nothing but four walls and a high ceiling. He pulled me away from the shuttle gently and to a doorway on the side of the room.
